Growing Your Government Business

Why Your First Government Contract Might Be a Subcontract

Evaluate a focused role under an established prime while understanding supplier review and flow-down responsibilities.

A narrower role can match current readiness

Subcontracting can let a new entrant provide a specific capability within a larger effort. The direct customer is generally the prime contractor, not the government. This can be practical without being universally easier.

Evaluate why it fits

  1. 01Your offering fills a real technical or capacity gap.
  2. 02The full prime scope exceeds current resources.
  3. 03A required vehicle limits direct participation.
  4. 04A manageable role can build relevant delivery evidence.
  5. 05The agreement's economics and responsibilities are acceptable.

Review obligations

Supplier approval, cybersecurity, data, quality, access, and labor terms may apply. A subcontract does not remove every compliance responsibility or guarantee prompt payment.

Avoid assumed commitments

A prime award or teaming conversation is not your subcontract. Confirm scope, price, authority, funding, and start conditions in the actual arrangement.

Research suitable primes and prepare a targeted capability introduction. The best first role is one you can perform reliably, with clear terms and a genuine reason to collaborate.
