How to Register Your Business in SAM.gov

A practical preparation guide to federal entity registration, validation, UEI, and keeping your SAM record current.

Use the official registration service

SAM.gov is the federal government's official System for Award Management. Registering directly in SAM.gov and obtaining a Unique Entity ID through the official service do not carry a government registration fee. A private company may charge for assistance, but paying that company is not a federal requirement.

Start from the official SAM.gov entity-registration page. Be cautious with paid advertisements, look-alike domains, urgent renewal messages, and claims that a consultant can guarantee approval or an award.

Gather consistent business information

  • Legal business name and physical address supported by business documents
  • Taxpayer identification and the corresponding taxpayer name where applicable
  • Banking and payment information requested for your registration purpose
  • Business structure, ownership information, and authorized points of contact
  • NAICS codes that accurately describe your work
  • Any existing UEI, CAGE code, or prior registration information

Names and addresses that differ across records can create validation problems. Keep sensitive tax and banking information in official systems, not public capability statements or marketing forms.

Work through the registration

  1. 01Sign in using the account process provided by SAM.gov and identify whether your entity already exists.
  2. 02Choose the registration purpose appropriate to seeking federal contracts. Requesting only a UEI is a different option and does not create an active registration for bidding as a prime.
  3. 03Complete entity validation. Respond to document requests through the official process.
  4. 04Complete the required registration sections, including business details, representations, certifications, and contacts.
  5. 05Submit the record and monitor status and any requests for corrections.
  6. 06Confirm the registration is active before relying on it for a procurement that requires active registration.

The screens and required fields can change. Follow the current official instructions rather than assuming every entity follows the same sequence.

After submission

Validation and activation are not instantaneous, and there is no universal completion date. Start before an important procurement deadline. If the record stalls, review the status, identify the particular validation issue, and use the help options linked from SAM.gov. Avoid duplicate registrations as a workaround.

Maintain the record

Keep authorized contacts current, protect account access, and review registration status and renewal requirements in the official system. Changes in legal name, address, ownership, or banking may require updates and further validation.

SAM registration is one administrative step. It does not establish a security clearance, an SBA program certification, or a contract award.
