How to Qualify for HUBZone Certification

Review location, ownership, employee residency, size, and continuing obligations before assuming HUBZone eligibility.

More than a qualifying address

HUBZone eligibility involves multiple conditions, including qualifying business size, ownership, principal-office location, and employee residency under the applicable rules. A mailing address in an eligible area alone is not sufficient.

Build a fact-based review

  1. 01Use the current SBA program guidance and official map.
  2. 02Determine the actual principal office under the rules, not just a registered-agent address.
  3. 03Review employee-residency requirements and applicable exceptions.
  4. 04Verify ownership and size, including affiliation where relevant.
  5. 05Gather supporting records and follow the official application process.

Avoid map-only conclusions

Area designations and program rules can change. Do not use an old screenshot as proof of continuing eligibility. Remote staff, multiple locations, and ownership changes can raise questions that require careful analysis.

Plan for maintenance

Certification is not permanent protection from later eligibility changes. Understand reporting, recertification, and examination responsibilities before applying. Use approved status accurately and evaluate each solicitation independently. HUBZone participation does not guarantee a contract or excuse delivery requirements.
