Growing Your Government Business
How Does a Company Obtain a Facility Security Clearance?
Understand legitimate classified need, sponsorship, company eligibility, and why an FCL is not a self-service credential.
Start with a legitimate classified requirement
Facility clearance processing is tied to a government-related need for access to classified information. A government contracting activity or eligible cleared contractor initiates sponsorship through the appropriate process. A company does not simply buy or self-certify an FCL.
Understand the preparation areas
- 01Confirm the classified need and sponsoring organization's role.
- 02Follow current DCSA eligibility and sponsorship guidance.
- 03Prepare business, ownership, management, and organizational records requested.
- 04Address key-management-personnel and foreign ownership, control, or influence questions as required.
- 05Establish the security responsibilities and arrangements appropriate to the facility's role.
Do not promise a timeline
Processing depends on facts, documentation, reviews, and required determinations. A generic duration cannot be guaranteed. Sponsorship does not itself establish approved clearance status.
Separate access and safeguarding
The required clearance level, personnel access, and ability to safeguard classified material are related but distinct. Follow the actual security requirements rather than assuming one approval authorizes every activity.
Use qualified industrial-security assistance and official DCSA guidance. Do not publish personal clearance details, sensitive sponsorship material, or unsupported facility-status claims in marketing.
Official sources
Check current instructions and requirements directly with the relevant agency.
