How to Sell Products or Services to the Department of Defense

Research DoD buying organizations, procurement routes, and supplier readiness for a specific offering.

DoD is many buying organizations

Defense customers purchase through different activities and vehicles. Begin with your actual deliverable and evidence of who buys it rather than approaching the department as one customer.

Build a targeted route

  1. 01Research public awards and notices for similar work.
  2. 02Identify the purchasing activity and mission need.
  3. 03Review official small-business and supplier resources.
  4. 04Determine whether direct competition, a vehicle, or subcontracting is practical.
  5. 05Prepare relevant capability evidence and accurate business information.

Check requirements before pursuing

Read specifications, quality requirements, schedule, payment, and applicable FAR/DFARS clauses. Identify protected data, cybersecurity, export, or security obligations where the work triggers them.

Do not assume a clearance is universally required or that a CAGE code proves technical approval. Product-specific sources and supplier conditions may matter.

Start with a concrete purchase

Choose one notice or prime relationship to evaluate in depth. Record fit, gaps, costs, and the next authorized action. Government sales depend on procurement and delivery readiness, not a relationship that promises influence or a guaranteed award.

Official sources

Check current instructions and requirements directly with the relevant agency.
