What Is NIST SP 800-171?
Understand the standard's purpose, revision context, and the difference between publication, contractual applicability, and assessment.
Protecting CUI in nonfederal systems
NIST SP 800-171 describes security requirements for protecting controlled unclassified information in nonfederal systems and organizations. It is not a universal requirement for every company or every piece of confidential business information.
Check the governing requirement
- 01Identify the data and relevant CUI authority or contractual designation.
- 02Read the contract clauses or other requirement making the standard applicable.
- 03Confirm the revision and implementation rules actually incorporated.
- 04Define systems, people, services, and data flows within scope.
- 05Determine documentation, assessment, and reporting obligations.
Publication is not automatic contract change
NIST's latest published revision and the revision used in a specific contractual program can differ. Do not assume publication alone amends every existing contract. Use the applicable clause and official program guidance.
Assessment is a separate question
Implementing requirements, documenting an environment, submitting a score, and obtaining required CMMC status are related but different actions. A self-assessment is not automatically third-party certification.
Avoid tool-only compliance claims. Responsible readiness combines accurate scope, controls, evidence, and accountable operations tied to the actual obligations.
Official sources
Check current instructions and requirements directly with the relevant agency.
