Can You Become a Defense Contractor Without a Facility Clearance?
Distinguish unclassified opportunities from work requiring classified access and avoid buying readiness that the scope does not need.
Many defense purchases are unclassified
A facility security clearance is associated with a legitimate need for classified access. It is not a universal prerequisite for supplying defense customers. Read the actual scope and security requirements before assuming it is necessary.
Review the opportunity
- 01Check whether classified access is required and at what level.
- 02Review security documents, locations, and personnel conditions.
- 03Distinguish CUI and other unclassified protected data from classified information.
- 04Identify cybersecurity or export obligations that may apply independently.
- 05Evaluate your direct or subcontracting role.
Unclassified does not mean unrestricted
An unclassified contract may still include data safeguarding, access, qualifications, or other compliance conditions. Do not assume an absence of a facility clearance requirement eliminates every security responsibility.
Avoid credential shopping
A CAGE code does not grant classified access, and a company cannot simply purchase an FCL as a general marketing credential. Follow DCSA's process when an actual classified need supports sponsorship.
Start with opportunities you can responsibly perform now. If a future requirement needs classified access, assess the formal process and dependencies rather than advertising an unsupported clearance.
