Getting Started

How Long Does It Take to Become Eligible for Federal Contracts?

Separate registration, certification, contract-specific readiness, and the sales timeline instead of relying on one promised date.

Eligibility is not a single clock

Federal contracting can involve entity validation, SAM activation, program certification, required vehicles, licenses, and contract-specific conditions. Some businesses already have much of the necessary infrastructure; others need significant preparation.

There is no responsible universal promise that a company becomes eligible for every federal contract within a fixed number of days.

Build a dependency list

  1. 01Identify the procurement or route you want to pursue.
  2. 02Review which registrations and statuses are actually required, and when.
  3. 03Gather consistent business records for validation.
  4. 04Identify requirements that need a separate application or external review.
  5. 05Check staffing, data handling, insurance, and delivery readiness.
  6. 06Track completion evidence rather than an assumed calendar date.

Allow for corrections and reviews

SAM submission is not the same as activation. An assigned UEI does not mean your registration is active. A pending certification is not approved status. Respond to official requests and start before a solicitation deadline rather than assuming an application can be rushed.

Separate readiness from winning business

Even when administratively eligible, your company may need time to research customers, build relevant relationships, prepare proposals, and wait for procurement decisions. Do not promise near-term revenue based on registration completion.

Choose the earliest realistic action supported by your current status, such as market research, a sources sought response, or a potential supplier discussion. Continue tracking the requirements of each opportunity individually.
