Getting Started

What Is the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA)?

Understand DLA's logistics and purchasing role and how to research whether your product fits its requirements.

Logistics support, not a universal defense buyer

The Defense Logistics Agency supports defense logistics and supply needs. Its activities include purchasing and managing a wide range of supplies and related services. DLA also administers the U.S. CAGE program.

Knowing DLA's name is useful; assuming it buys everything your business sells is not. A software company, component manufacturer, or maintenance provider should research the particular organization and requirement relevant to its offer.

Research the right purchasing route

  1. 01Start with DLA's official site and supplier resources.
  2. 02Identify the buying activity, product area, or notice that matches your actual capability.
  3. 03Review the official solicitation or supplier instructions, including any systems used for that purchase.
  4. 04Check specifications, quality requirements, delivery conditions, packaging, and approved-source restrictions where applicable.
  5. 05Determine whether you can bid directly or should explore a supplier relationship with an established contractor.

Identifiers are only one part of readiness

A CAGE code helps identify a business. It does not establish that the business is an approved source for a particular item, meets a technical specification, or holds a clearance. Other registrations or supplier steps may be necessary for the actual purchasing system.

Make the first review concrete

Choose a real requirement rather than a general goal to sell to DLA. Record what must be supplied, how the buyer evaluates it, when delivery is due, and what evidence is required. Product traceability, capacity, and cost can matter as much as marketing. If requirements are unclear, use the solicitation's authorized question process rather than guessing.

Official sources

Check current instructions and requirements directly with the relevant agency.
