How to Become a Defense Contractor in 2027

Prepare for defense work in 2027 by matching a real capability to buyers and checking the requirements of each opportunity.

Start with a useful defense capability

Defense contractors supply products and services that support defense missions. Some contract directly with a government buyer; others deliver to a prime contractor. There is no single defense-contractor license that makes a company eligible for every opportunity.

For 2027 planning, use current official procurement and cybersecurity requirements rather than assuming today's solicitation will match next year's. Manufacturing, simulation, software, professional services, and unclassified support can involve different obligations.

Build a readiness plan

  1. 01Define the work you can deliver and identify agencies or primes buying it.
  2. 02Complete the registrations appropriate to your route, including active SAM when required for federal prime work.
  3. 03Prepare a targeted capability statement using actual experience.
  4. 04Read the prospective contract's FAR and DFARS clauses, data requirements, and supplier conditions.
  5. 05Evaluate staffing, quality, accounting, cash flow, and cybersecurity needs before committing.

Avoid universal security assumptions

A CAGE code is not a clearance. A facility clearance is associated with classified work and is not necessary for every defense purchase. CMMC obligations depend on applicable requirements and the procurement, not a company's ambition to enter the market.

A practical first step

Choose one relevant notice and one potential prime. Compare their requirements with your current readiness, record gaps, and decide whether to respond, pursue a subcontract, or prepare for a later opportunity. Do not buy credentials or infrastructure without understanding the work they would support.

Official sources

Check current instructions and requirements directly with the relevant agency.
