Is SAM.gov Registration Really Free?
Separate official SAM registration at no cost from optional paid assistance and misleading renewal offers.
The official service has no registration fee
You can register an entity, obtain a UEI, and maintain your record directly through SAM.gov without paying a government registration fee. Commercial firms may offer paid help, but their fee is for their service, not a federal requirement.
This distinction matters when advertisements or renewal messages resemble government communications. A paid search result, official-looking seal, or urgent subject line does not establish that a sender is a government agency.
Before paying anyone
- 01Navigate independently to SAM.gov instead of using an unfamiliar email link.
- 02Check your actual registration status in the official system.
- 03Read the proposed service scope, fee, cancellation terms, and who controls the account.
- 04Consider the official APEX assistance referral for registration questions.
- 05Keep your business's authorized contacts and account access under your control.
Protect the sensitive information
SAM may request legitimate business, tax, and banking information through its official workflow. Do not give passwords, authentication codes, or documents to an unverified sender. If you use an adviser, establish their role through the proper account process rather than sharing credentials casually.
Paying does not guarantee approval
Entity validation, accurate representations, and activation still follow the official process. A consultant cannot promise a contract award or bypass required checks. If you are stuck, identify the specific issue in your record and use official support. The right starting question is what help you need, not whether a payment will make the government accept your business.
Official sources
Check current instructions and requirements directly with the relevant agency.
