How to Get a Unique Entity ID (UEI)

Understand how SAM assigns a UEI, what entity validation involves, and why a UEI alone is not an active registration.

What the identifier does

The Unique Entity ID identifies an entity in federal award systems. SAM.gov provides the official process for getting it. A business can request a UEI without completing a full registration, but that limited record is not the same as being actively registered for federal procurement.

Choose the workflow based on what you need to do. A subcontract reporting requirement may differ from bidding as a federal prime. Follow the instructions associated with the actual transaction.

Prepare and request the identifier

  1. 01Search for an existing entity record before creating another one.
  2. 02Confirm your legal business name and physical address against supporting records.
  3. 03Sign in through SAM.gov's account process and select the appropriate entity workflow.
  4. 04Complete validation and provide requested evidence through the official channel.
  5. 05Record the assigned UEI and check whether further registration steps are necessary.

Resolve mismatches rather than duplicating records

A variation in a business name or address can complicate validation. Read the specific request for information and correct the underlying inconsistency. A second record is not a reliable solution to a delayed first record.

Use the UEI accurately

Include the validated identifier where a buyer or prime asks for it. Do not describe it as an SBA certification, security clearance, or government endorsement. If you need to pursue federal prime awards, separately confirm registration status and the requirements of the solicitation. Getting an identifier completes an identification task, not your whole market-entry strategy.
