Growing Your Government Business

Why Your Capability Statement Isn't Generating Interest

Review relevance, evidence, recipient fit, clarity, and follow-up rather than assuming a redesign alone will create demand.

Diagnose the message and the audience

A capability statement can be accurate but irrelevant to the recipient. It can also be visually polished while failing to explain what the business actually delivers.

Review five questions

  1. 01Can a reader identify the specific offering and customer problem?
  2. 02Is the experience relevant and authorized to disclose?
  3. 03Are differentiators concrete rather than generic adjectives?
  4. 04Does the recipient buy or partner for this capability?
  5. 05Is there a clear, reasonable next step?

Remove unhelpful clutter

Too many unrelated codes, vague services, and unsupported credentials can hide the strongest offer. Keep identifiers and status accurate, but do not treat them as the whole value proposition.

Test the channel

Follow the buyer's or prime's official introduction process and tailor the accompanying note. A document attached to mass outreach may never receive a meaningful review.

Ask for focused feedback and improve one issue at a time. Interest depends on demand, fit, timing, and trust as well as clarity. No template can guarantee introductions or contracts.

Check current instructions and requirements directly with the relevant agency.
