How to Find Your Company's PSC Codes

Use Product and Service Codes to understand how federal buyers describe purchases and broaden opportunity research.

PSC describes the purchase

Product and Service Codes classify what the federal government buys. They are different from NAICS, which classifies industry activities. A company may encounter several PSCs depending on the products or services purchased.

There is no single PSC certification that approves your company. Use codes as a way to research buyers and purchases, not as a substitute for reading scope.

Find relevant codes through actual examples

  1. 01Describe your deliverable: a product, a service, or a combination.
  2. 02Review relevant SAM notices and USAspending award records for the PSCs used.
  3. 03Check the current official PSC descriptions through the resources linked from SAM.gov.
  4. 04Compare related codes rather than assuming the first match is exhaustive.
  5. 05Record a small, relevant list alongside your search terms and NAICS research.

Distinguish the labels

NAICS, PSC, and a city's commodity codes are not interchangeable. A federal record's PSC may be useful for research without being the classification a local vendor portal requests. Follow the particular system's instructions when completing a profile or search.

Improve the search, then read the requirement

Try a PSC-based search and compare it with a keyword search. Inspect the resulting scopes, purchasing offices, and award histories. If the code produces many irrelevant results, narrow by buyer or refine the deliverable description. A code match is only a research lead; specifications, eligibility, dates, and contract terms determine whether there is a real opportunity.
