How to Set Up Government Contract Email Alerts

Use SAM saved searches and notice-following features, then keep local procurement notifications in a separate routine.

Alerts support a search routine

Email notifications can reduce repeated manual searching, but they should not be your only source of procurement information. Filters can miss unusual wording, emails can be delayed or filtered, and changes to a notice may require a fresh review.

SAM.gov offers account-based features for saving searches and following opportunities. Exact controls and notification settings may change; use the current SAM help linked through the official Federal Service Desk if a menu differs from this workflow.

Set up a useful federal search

  1. 01Sign in to SAM.gov through its official account process.
  2. 02Run a Contract Opportunities search and test the results before saving it.
  3. 03Choose a manageable combination of terms, agency, notice type, and other relevant filters.
  4. 04Save the search with a name that identifies its market, such as city-independent federal IT support or defense simulation research.
  5. 05Review the saved-search notification settings available in your account and enable the options that fit your routine.
  6. 06Follow specific notices you are evaluating and review how the account handles update notifications.

Saving a search and following an individual notice serve different purposes. Confirm both settings rather than assuming one covers the other.

Avoid over-filtering

Start with a broader discovery search and a separate narrow high-fit search. If every search requires a specific agency, code, location, and exact phrase, you may miss work described another way. Revisit terms when relevant notices appear outside your alerts.

Keep state and local notifications separate

Cities, counties, states, universities, and school districts use their own portals and sometimes third-party bid platforms. Register with the actual buyer's official procurement site, select relevant commodity codes or categories, and confirm the portal's notification preferences. A SAM alert will not replace those subscriptions.

Assign a review owner

  • Route notices to a monitored business inbox.
  • Review new opportunities on a regular schedule.
  • Record original and amended deadlines in a tracker.
  • Reopen the official notice before preparing or submitting a response.
  • Remove stale searches and adjust those producing irrelevant results.

Do not assume an email means the complete solicitation has been received. Check attachments, amendments, and the official submission method. Missing a deadline because an alert was not read is still a business risk your team needs to manage.
