Where to Find Government Contracting Mentors and Industry Associations

Distinguish counseling, informal mentoring, formal mentor-protégé programs, and association participation before committing time or dues.

Choose the kind of support you need

Informal mentoring, government-contracting counseling, association participation, and an SBA-approved mentor-protégé relationship serve different purposes. Start with the question you need help answering rather than joining every group.

Research appropriate resources

  1. 01Use SBA's official local-assistance and mentoring referrals.
  2. 02Find the APEX center serving your business for procurement questions.
  3. 03Review formal mentor-protégé requirements through current SBA guidance if that model is relevant.
  4. 04Investigate associations whose communities align with your buyers and capability.
  5. 05Review actual events, chapters, participation requirements, and dues before joining.

Government, defense, simulation, space, cybersecurity, and technology communities can overlap. Groups such as AFCEA, NDIA, NCMS, NCS, and SFA have different missions; investigate fit rather than treating them as interchangeable lead sources.

Verify expectations

Membership does not buy government access, endorsement, referrals, or contracts. A mentor should provide useful perspective without asking for confidential procurement information or promising influence.

Commit to participation

Assign time for learning, useful contribution, and follow-up. A small number of well-used relationships can be more valuable than a long list of inactive memberships. Desra's network can complement these efforts, but is not a replacement for official assistance or your own business development.

Official sources

Check current instructions and requirements directly with the relevant agency.

Bring your capabilities into the conversation.

The Solution Network is open to qualified companies at no cost. Share what you deliver and where your solutions could help. Relationships develop through understanding, trust, and fit, not guaranteed opportunities.
