How to Prepare for a Government Contracting Matchmaking Event

Research participants, focus short meetings, and create useful next steps without assuming a meeting guarantees a lead.

Short meetings need specific preparation

Matchmaking events can connect businesses with agencies or primes for introductory discussions. Read the event's purpose, eligibility, registration, and scheduling process. A scheduled meeting is not a procurement commitment.

Prepare for each participant

  1. 01Research what the organization buys or delivers.
  2. 02Tailor the capability emphasis to a possible fit.
  3. 03Prepare one or two useful questions.
  4. 04Bring accurate, authorized evidence and current contacts.
  5. 05Define a realistic follow-up you can complete.

Make the meeting useful

Explain your offering briefly, then listen. Ask about public resources, supplier processes, and relevant needs rather than demanding access to contracts. Do not share controlled data or unsupported credentials.

Record the result honestly

A referral to a portal, request for information, and a possible future conversation are different outcomes. Note what was actually agreed and who owns the next action.

Follow up with relevant information and respect procurement restrictions. Matchmaking can improve understanding and relationships, but does not guarantee introductions beyond the event, supplier approval, or awards.

Official sources

Check current instructions and requirements directly with the relevant agency.
