How to Research Government Contract Awards on USAspending.gov
Investigate agencies, recipients, award types, and obligations without mistaking public award totals for guaranteed future demand.
Research buying patterns
USAspending.gov provides public federal spending data. It can help you identify agencies buying related work, recipients of awards, classifications, and geographic or historical patterns. Use it to form questions about the market, not to assume an incumbent's contract is open for competition.
Start with a focused search
- 01Choose relevant contract award types and agencies.
- 02Try keywords, recipient names, NAICS, or PSC filters.
- 03Open individual awards and review descriptions, dates, recipient information, and available transaction details.
- 04Record award identifiers so you can cross-check official notices or agency records.
- 05Compare several awards before drawing conclusions about customer demand.
Understand the numbers
Obligations, outlays, award values, and potential ceilings describe different things. An indefinite-delivery contract ceiling is not the same as actual spending or a guaranteed amount available to a subcontractor. Read the site's data definitions and distinguish transactions from summary totals.
Use caution with timing and scope
Public records may lag, contain abbreviated descriptions, or require contextual interpretation. A listed end date does not prove there will be a recompete on that date. An award description may not capture the full work statement.
Turn findings into actions
Identify a buying office to research, a prime to evaluate, or search terms to improve. Use current official notices to confirm a bidding opportunity. Award research is most valuable when it helps you narrow your market and understand real purchasing behavior.
Official sources
Check current instructions and requirements directly with the relevant agency.
