Finding Opportunities
What Is a Federal Procurement Forecast?
Use agency forecasts to research planned purchases while keeping dates, scope, and acquisition strategy provisional.
A planning tool, not a solicitation
An agency procurement forecast describes anticipated buying activity. It can help businesses identify potential requirements, purchasing offices, expected timing, and possible acquisition approaches. Details and publication formats vary by agency.
The forecast does not create a contract, authorize a bid, or guarantee that funding and requirements will remain unchanged.
How to use one
- 01Find the forecast through the agency's official procurement or small-business site.
- 02Identify planned purchases related to your current capability.
- 03Record the description, source date, office, tentative timing, and available contact information.
- 04Compare the forecast with public notices and previous awards.
- 05Decide whether research, a capability introduction, or preparation is a useful next step.
Ask better questions
Rather than asking whether the agency will hire your company, ask where public updates will appear, what market-research process is expected, and which official resources describe the need. Observe communication restrictions and do not request protected acquisition information.
Track changes
Keep forecast leads separate from released solicitations. Review them periodically and update changed dates or scope. An old forecast entry can remain useful context without being a current opportunity.
Use the extra lead time to understand requirements, prepare evidence, and evaluate possible teammates. Do not spend heavily on a forecast-based pursuit until the evidence supports it. The value is earlier planning, not certainty about an eventual contract.
Official sources
Check current instructions and requirements directly with the relevant agency.
